Book Review: The Helping Sweater by Rachel Más Davidson
The Helping Sweater by Rachel Más Davidson
I have a favorite wool sweater that I bought at the thrift store. I have been really into thrifting lately and I found this AMAZING merino wool sweater perfect for the coming cold months. What does this have to do with the book? Well, like the main character of this book, Maya, I would also be devastated if it started to unravel.
Maya’s sweater gets unraveled by her cat, and she is very upset about this. Although she soon realizes that the yarn from her sweater can help the world. From a bird building its nest, to a boy needing help when his pants rip. This story is great for older toddlers to even first graders. It’s a great message and I know my three year old would love to hear the creative ways we can use yarn. I love how Aida's message in this book teaches children that difficult things will happen, but we must learn to overcome them. Resilience is an essential skill, and this book does a wonderful job of making it accessible to kids.
Activity
An entertaining activity to do after reading this book would be to take a piece of yarn and find ways around the house or classroom to use it. I find that measuring is really fun for kids or even trying to tie it around different objects. I like simple activities that don’t require a lot of supplies and this one is perfect for small children learning to tie knots!
